Esther: Discovering Jesus in Unexpected Places
The Book of Esther is renowned for its enthralling narrative of bravery, divine intervention, and the rescue of an entire people. While it may not overtly reference Jesus Christ, closer scrutiny reveals spiritual insights and echoes of the Savior within its narrative. Let’s unearth the unmistakable presence of Jesus in the Book of Esther.
Set against the backdrop of ancient Persia during King Xerxes’ (Ahasuerus) reign, the book narrates the tale of Esther, a young Jewish woman. Through a series of remarkable events, she becomes queen and, ultimately, risks her life to thwart a genocidal plot orchestrated by the nefarious Haman. Although it may seem like a historical account with little bearing on Jesus, it is a remarkable example of divine providence in seemingly secular events.
One of the most conspicuous ways Jesus is alluded to in the Book of Esther is through the character of Esther herself. She embodies many qualities that resonate with the life and mission of Jesus. Just as Esther willingly endangered her life to intercede for her people, Jesus selflessly sacrificed Himself for humanity’s salvation. Esther’s humility, courage, and audacity to approach the king despite the peril parallel Jesus’s willingness to approach the Father on our behalf, interceding for our sins.
Another amazing aspect of Jesus’s presence in Esther is the theme of deliverance and salvation. Esther’s pivotal role in the salvation of the Jewish people mirrors Jesus as the ultimate Savior, liberating humanity from the shackles of sin and death. Esther’s actions led to the salvation of a nation, while Jesus’s sacrifice extended the offer of salvation to all who profess faith in Him.
The absence of God’s name in the Book of Esther mirrors the subtlety of His presence in our lives. Although God’s name is never explicitly mentioned, His influence is palpable throughout the narrative. This serves as a reminder of how Jesus often works quietly and discreetly in our lives, guiding, safeguarding, and orchestrating events for our benefit.
The Purim festival, established during Esther’s time to commemorate the Jews’ deliverance, offers a glimpse of Jesus. While the specific rituals differ, the celebration of deliverance and salvation resonates with the Christian faith, which revolves around commemorating Jesus’s resurrection and His sacrifice through the Eucharist. The parallel lies not in the rituals themselves but in the celebration of deliverance and salvation.
Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and mentor, also embodies aspects of Jesus’s character. His wisdom, integrity, and devotion to God’s people are reminiscent of Christ’s qualities. His guidance to Esther and his steadfast commitment to God’s people reflect the kind of support and counsel that Jesus provides to His followers.
Esther’s story transcends its role as a historical account; it serves as a narrative interwoven with spiritual threads that reveal Jesus’s presence in the most unexpected of places. As we study this book, we will uncover how Esther’s story foreshadows the redemptive work of Jesus, reminding us that God’s providence and salvation are at work in our lives, even when His name is not explicitly mentioned. Esther’s valor, sacrifice, intercession, the theme of deliverance, and the subtle presence of God collectively point us toward the ultimate revelation of Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer.
