HOW TO IDENTIFY KEY WORDS AND THEMES IN THE BIBLE
Identifying key words and themes is an important part of studying the Bible. Here are some tips on how to identify key words and themes when studying the Bible:
Read the passage carefully: Read the passage several times, paying attention to the words and phrases that stand out to you. Take note of any repeated words or phrases, as well as any words that are emphasized.
Use a concordance: A concordance is a tool that lists all the words in the Bible and shows where they appear. You can use a concordance to find all the occurrences of a particular word in the Bible, which can help you identify key themes. (Just remember to keep the context in mind, words mean different things in context). For more than 10 years, I have used BLUELETTER BIBLE as a concordance. This free online Bible study app is easy to use and provides great study tools. Try it out just type a word in the box below, pick a Bible transation, and click Search.
Consider the context: Consider the context of the passage, including the historical and cultural context, as well as the literary context. Understanding the context can help you understand the meaning of the words and the themes they convey.
Look for contrasts: Look for words or phrases that contrast with each other, such as light and darkness, love and hate, or righteousness and wickedness. Contrasts can help you identify key themes and ideas.
Note the author's purpose: Consider the author's purpose in writing the passage. What is the author trying to communicate? What themes or ideas is the author emphasizing?
